"A poppy flower is beautiful,
and a thousand poppies is dangerous"
-- David Wilcox, "Strong Chemistry"

It is in the blue, the blood, the veins of poppies.
There in an arid lake of ashes, titles
of paperback books, the deliberate name
on a random business card – all of this
guides them inexorably toward the pistil,
stamen, the nocturnal core of floral
organs; to Godfrey’s cordial that keeps hungry

people quiet. They bloom grandly
beside fresh graves of fallen heroes;
speak to the dead of the density
of destiny. Yes, poppies will make them sleep
together mercifully in the flare, keenly aware
of peril, ever mindful of these milky fluids
they must but should not touch.
